Remembering the Uptown Backstage Cinema

I painted this box this week as part of a Bell Box beautification project in the Yonge and Bloor area. I based the piece on the signage of the Uptown Backstage theatre which was demolished about 10 years ago.

A big thank you to 6 St. Joseph House for securing the funding to make this project happen.

As part of this project, Artists had to choose a historical photograph from the City of Toronto archives to base their artwork on. As I am a big fan of abstract and text-based art, I steered clear of horse and buggy photographs and went for some bright colours instead.

"The Rat Race" to be screened on all TTC subway platforms October 18 - 25, 2010

For those that ride the TTC, next week a new animation that Adeyemi Adegbesan and myself put together down at the Leslie Spit will be screened on subway platforms. Our piece is called the Rat Race:

Bricks and Cinder Block come alive down at Toronto’s Leslie Spit in this 1-minute animation by Adeyemi Adegbesan and Michael Brown. This discarded material of demolished Toronto buildings takes on a range of personalities. Scurrying out from behind big boulders and clambering up and over slabs of cement sub-flooring, the material orders itself and encounters a little magic, looking east out over Lake Ontario.

Thanks for the support from the Toronto Animated Image Society who put together the project and to Madi Piller and Tara Schorr from TAIS who mentored and inspired the 6 artist teams over the summer. The project was a lot of fun!

There's Math in Art

These 3 paintings are a continuation of the project, "What does a quart of paint look like?" In the first piece I stencilled out the contents of a 200ml tube of Winton Ivory Black--starting with 1, 2, 3 and so on until I ran out of paint at number 27. The second piece I stencilled a 200ml tube of Titanium White 25 times and in the third piece I emptied the contents of a can of Montana Gold, 1 number at a time until the can died at number 109. In this series, the content and look of the painting are decided by the quantity of paint in the container being used.

Submission for Palladium Park Benches, Burlington

Below are the 3 designs I recently submitted to the City of Burlington for the soon to be built Palladium Park. The first image is the GPS coordinates of the bench's location. The second are 3 species of fish (Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Chinook Salmon) that return every year to spawn in the nearby Bronte Creek. The third image has been created using digital photos that I shot of tree bark, wheat on the ground and the earth that is found in this area of Burlington.

Submission for Liberty Village BENCHmark program

This submission was created by photographing address plates and ad hoc signage in Toronto's Liberty Village. BENCHmark is an initiative that commissions Artists to create one of a kind park benches. My bench "Wired Up" was installed in 2006 on Mowat Avenue opposite Lamport Stadium.
